Meant to Be

You and I will be forever
Happy just to play together

Working our way through this life's mysteries

I want to find out things about you
Going through life with my arms around you
I've got a feeling this love's meant to be

And everyday I'll say you're always in my heart
Even when it hurts, I'll say we'll never be apart

For in the end, it's the good times that will be
The one's we remember from now to eternity

Mote Marine Aquarium

Oh grandma, scary shark!

Last month, when we were in Florida, we took a fun family trip to the aquarium, since we can get in free with our reciprocal zoo pass. Henry really loves fish, so we thought he would be interested, and it was a really fun family adventure. I meant to share pictures awhile ago, but never did, so I'll take the opportunity to now.

Splashing in the touch tank, and touching a sea urchin

Demonstrating how a turtle doesn't get caught in the shrimp net!

one step at a time

Our baby took baby steps yesterday! He was practicing balancing outside yesterday at lunch, and decided to be brave and lift one foot up and move it forward. He did this twice, and but didn't want to transfer his weight. Later, in the house, I stood him up, and he took three little steps right into his mama's arms! So proud of you Henry and you brought tears to my eyes. Henry was really proud of himself too, as he was all smiles. My baby is learning to walk! A couple more times we practiced balancing, and he would look up to the sky like he was gathering the strength and you could see the little wheels moving in his head as he tried to figure it out. No other steps though. I tried a couple of times to get him on video, which we're going to keep handy now. We're still a bit away from more steps though, since when we prop him up without support, he mostly just wants to crumple and crawl. Luckily, Gabe was there to see him move his one foot at lunch, but unfortunately he didn't see Henry in the afternoon. And when Gabe got home from work, Henry was on to our tricks and wouldn't even stand by himself. He still only balances by himself without support for maybe 20-30 seconds. He'll let go on his own from a table, but only if he is distracted with a toy or food and doesn't realize what he's doing. He'll get there on his own time. What a big day Henry! One small step for Henry, one giant leap for the Brown Family!

Catching Up

For someone who doesn't post that often, I've kinda been on a roll lately, haven't I? It's really only to make up for lost time. Yes, I do feel guilty that I didn't get my son's Happy Birthday post up until six days after his actual birthday. Sheesh. Way to go mom. They need to take away my wings, or pin, or whatever you get when you become a mom. My diaper bag and stroller and sweats, I guess. Except I really need those to make my life easier. They can take away my spit-up clothes instead. You definitely get those when you become a mom!

Anyway, yes, we've been extremely busy. We hosted tons of family the week of Henry's birthday, which kept us nice and busy, and of course celebrating kept us busy. Fun, and definitely felt an empty hole when everyone left. In addition, we've been house hunting! Gabe and I have been pretty seriously looking. We've looked at over 30 houses, and have narrowed the pool down. We still haven't found the perfect (or as near to perfect as we can get!) house for us yet, but we will. And we WILL move. This neighborhood just isn't for us anymore. Mostly, we don't feel that it is safe and we're ready to be in a family friendly place. And we're excited about having a new house all of our own. It is definitely a daunting purchase to buy your own home, but it will be good for us. We don't want to be renters forever, that's for sure. So we'll keep updated once that moves along.

My eyes are slowly but surely coming back to normal. Which is also why I feel like I'm able to post more. It just was too painful to be looking at a blurry computer and not really know what I was typing. Still not perfect, but more and more periods of good vision. I've just got to give it time I think.

Henry is balancing on his own more and more. Still no more interest in walking really though. He still doesn't love balancing either, but will do it for a little bit. At least long enough for us to get a few pictures! We're excited to be on the verge of walking, but still letting him take his time. He loves looking up at the ceiling or sky when he balances, a new perspective I guess.

Not sure why these pictures are small, but just going to go with it since I need to make dinner soon!

What a funny face!
Practice with dad
Standing all by myself and proud of it!And just because he's so cute.....

And the overalls Henry's sporting? Roundhouse, a brand made in daddy's hometown in Oklahoma! Just call Henry Bob the Builder :) Or Handy Manny. Two shows I've actually never watched so I'm not sure which one he looks like more in the overalls, but the orange does make him look like a construction worker. I'm sure I'll learn soon enough....

It feels like fall

It's August. The middle of August to be exact, and September is just around the corner. And fall, here, is definitely on the way. The weather's cloudy and cool. We've broken out the jeans and light sweaters. I quickly took stock of Henry's fall clothing situation and bought some needed items. The band had it's first march out this week, followed by lots of practices as they choose new members. There's a crispness in the air. The back to school commercials and school supplies are in full force, and have been for awhile. We Packed a Back Pack. I'm headed back to school as well. Our summer plans have changed to fall travel season. And it feels like football. In fact, the first game is in less than two weeks. Campus is packed again, with lazy summer evenings walking around an empty campus giving way to cars packed with new carpets, refrigerators and shower shoes waiting to be unloaded. It feels like fall.

And I do love fall. But this summer flew by, way to quickly. And I know that winter is just around the corner, waiting to rear its snow filled head. But we're going to enjoy fall. Football, the band, tailgating, chili and hot chocolate. Jumping in leaves will be especially fun with Henry this year. Apple picking, apple cider, pumpkin picking and carving, all to be enjoyed with our one year old bundle of energy. Jackets and sweaters and fall colors.

Henry and I are making sure to enjoy the last days of summer, getting out as much as we can for walks and bike rides, swings and the park and zoo. Twice a day, three times a day even, for as long as we can. Here's to hoping we have an Indian summer this year too!

We did see the band's first march out, one of my favorite traditions. Brings back memories for a few reasons. It's hard to believe that as a new freshman, I participated in band camp too, and well, we know how that turned out, but it was really fun to be part of the band if for only a few days. Turns out marching and playing at the same time was too difficult for me to learn in four days. And, last year, watching the band march out was our first big outing with Henry, at only a week old. The first time we actually showered, changed out of pajamas, packed up the stroller and diaper bag and headed to an adventure. Henry slept through the band then! But this time, he was a little confused and a little shocked at the loud sound, but did well. And we've seen the band march a lot more this week too. He's got to practice listening. And his friends were there too, trumpets in hand! Henry even brought his little trumpet!

Like I said, it's fall, and that means rain, even on the band march out! Henry actually did fine in the rain too. He's such a big boy. He even liked it a little!

Makes me laugh! What a funny rain face!

P is for Party

H is for Happy
B is for Birthday

When discussing Henry's party over the past few months, Gabe and I both wanted something simple, didn't really care too much for a typical theme, or going nuts on buying a big party package. Actually, we'll never do that, that's not the type of party we like to throw. And actually, I thought about ideas and themes, but couldn't settle on one. In fact, the theme BIRTHDAY was tossed out quite a few times. We'll save the themes for Henry to pick out when he's able. But, after reading this blog, and a little of this blog (which is actually where we borrowed the idea) we decided to compromise and purchase a fun, cute set of ABC flashcards to serve as inspiration for the party. Gabe designed the invitations to resemble the flashcards, and we decorated with bright colors and displayed the flash cards around the house. Pretty fun, super easy, almost all homemade, and it turned out pretty cute. Here's some photos:

And some more of Henry's party!

Having fun in the baby pool with friends Anna and Evi.

Can you open presents in your diaper on your birthday? Absolutely you can!

Happy First Birthday Henry!

Henry turned ONE! This past week and weekend, we celebrated in style with both sides of the family up to enjoy the big birthday boy. We kicked off the birthday weekend reminiscing about Henry's birth one year ago, and for nostalgia ate at the pizza place where we ate the night before Henry's birthday. That night, my labor basically started at the pizza place, or at least where I could start timing contractions. I was glad that this time, I was pain free! :)

Henry's actual birthday on Friday was a day filled with his favorite activities and favorite foods. And since food is so important in our family, I'll take the opportunity to record his good eats here :). Breakfast of champions of bananas and eggs, lunch of blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, cheese and yogurt, and a delicious dinner of carrots, beef, fruit and pasta. And plenty of puffs for snacks of course!

We took Henry swimming at the hotel pool where my parents were staying, including lots of splashing, kicking and squealing! A trip to the park for a picnic dinner, and we brought a push toy that Henry loved pushing far, far, far. Of course, swings and climbing too. And ICE CREAM for dessert! We had a blast and loved spending time with Henry doing his favorite things.

On Saturday, Henry threw a party for his family and some of his friends, and the kids played outside in the baby pool, swing and with some of Henry's new toys. We sang Happy Birthday for like the 10th time to him, and saved the squish cupcake for the party. He dived right in, made a huge mess, and loved it! A quick rinse off in the pool and time for some ripping of the wrapping paper. We loved watching him play, enjoyed having a one year old, and reminisced about the past year.

Happy Birthday Henry Button!
We love you and we're so proud of you!

What's going on?

Yes, it's been awhile since I last posted. And a lot has happened over the past two weeks, plenty worth mentioning. But...my eye sight has been less than perfect, making detail work like typing and uploading pictures challenging. More on that later. First and foremost, news and updates on Henry.

He's waving! And clapping! So cute. He learned how to wave bye-bye last weekend at a friend's birthday party as we were leaving. Open close, open close with his hand outstretched. Perfect. And he has mastered opening his arms real wide, and then closing them with a hand clap. Not repetitive clapping, but a big wonderful clap. Perfect. Henry can also stick his arms up, causing you to stick yours up too in the classic "SO BIG!", which he thinks is hilarious. Also tickling his funny bone these days is Ring Around the Rosy with a big "all fall down" at the end.

We've been spending our days swinging, swimming in the baby pool, and just enjoying the gorgeous outdoor weather. I'm still working on finding day care for Henry when I go back to work part time in the fall, for 10 hours a week working with the guidance counselor on anti-bullying curriculum and character education. So that means Henry and I have been visiting day cares and preschools. We've found a few that we really like, but availability is a challenge. So we continue to work on it and hopefully will find a solution soon.

Two weeks ago we traveled for what will be the last time for a while to Florida to visit family. I also had PRK, a derivative of LASIK eye surgery in order to correct my dependency on contact or glasses since the first grade. Unfortunately, this surgery requires a longer recovery period and so my vision is not great yet. I'm having trouble seeing details, like signs in the road, and also anything close up like reading or computer work. So any spelling errors in this post can be attributed to eyesight, not my poor spelling skills. Hopefully I'll be seeing more clearly quickly. I'll keep you posted. Get it? Wow, bad blogging joke.

In Florida, Henry enjoyed swimming everyday, spending time with grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, and great aunts and great uncles. We took the opportunity to have a practice birthday party to celebrate Henry's first birthday. He did wondefully! Previously, with so many people and so much commotion, Henry found large family gatherings a little challenging at times. But at one year old, he handled himself like a pro. Opening presents? No sweat. Showing off my swimming moves? Like a champ. Having everyone sing Happy Birthday to me? So proud. Eating ice cream? You bet! Henry's real first birthday celebration is next weekend and we're so excited! We've got a little bit of planning yet to do, but we're excited so many of Henry's friends and family members will be here.

Pictures forth coming.....once I find the cord to our camera to upload. Entries with pictures are so much more exciting that entries without. Sorry about that.
