Maggie Update

I know I’ll be saying the following statement for the rest of my life, but time really is flying. It is hard to believe that Maggie is three weeks old already. She is changing so much (tears!) and we are adjusting to life at home.

Awake Time

Maggie is an expert at looking at her hands as she turns her head to the side! Practically every time you lay her down, her arm goes up and she finds her little fist. She loves to look out of her window on her changing table, which is leading to easier diaper changes.

Tummy time, but not loving it

Her umbilical cord fell off right at 2 weeks old, and we were able to take a tubby! She did pretty well, only crying at the end on her first tubby. Second one was even better.

Henry even helped with the last tubby, and he loved helping wash Maggie! Wrapping up the baby in the tub, so helpful in keeping them calm. She's really starting to get the hang of getting clean.

Sleeping

Maggie's almost not a newborn anymore – she’s more alert although still sleeping a ton of course. She mostly likes to sleep on someone, and wakes up almost the moment you put her down. We’re happy to oblige and hold her though, as much as we can J At night, she’s sleeping in her swing just like Henry did – something about it being so cozy. She sleeps really well, and has recently fallen into a three hour pattern at night, and she falls asleep right away after nursing, which is a treat. We have nap time on the couch together in the afternoons while Henry naps – I either nap or work on a few things while I hold her. She’s so cuddly and I love her so much!

my new wrap - so handy!

Eating

Nursing has had it’s ups and downs. The two weeks were somewhat difficult to nurse her as we had to wake her for every feeding, and had to be stimulated to eat the whole time – by rubbing her back, tickling her feet, unwrapping her. Then she went through a growth spurt at one week and two weeks, cluster feeding every hour at night and leaving me so very sore. However, now she is in a more regular pattern, eating well, and I’m feeling much better. Hurray! She’s growing like a weed and almost outgrowing her newborn clothes and newborn diapers. At the doctor today: 7lbs, 7 ounces and 21 inches (12th% weight and 56% height)! She's really growing, whohoo, she needs to!

love to our baby girl :)

Ag Days 2011

For the past three years, we've been to Ag Days in the late winter at the 4H Fair, and this year, it was our first outing as a family of four! We loaded up the kiddos (got ourselves dressed and out of the house in two hours - we're working on improving that time!) and headed on down to the "ferris wheel" as Henry called it. It is 100% kid friendly, with stations to visit, animals to see, and tractors to sit in. I'll let you guess which part was Henry's favorite.

First, some animals:
He was really into touching all the animals this year - goats, rabbits, dogs, cows, you name it.

The stations are all farm oriented of course, with apples to pick, cotton to pick, and cows to milk. For some reason, Henry thought he had to stick his tongue out when he took this picture. I have about five other copies, all with his tongue out. We figured out later that maybe the kid in front us stuck his tongue out, but we didn't notice but Henry did. Silly boy and silly Dad!
He really liked milking the cow this year. Last year, not so much, but this year, definitely.

He did a really good job roping the cow too, swinging around the lasso. So serious. Must have been all of his cowboy practice at Halloween.

Did you guess which activity was Henry's favorite? Yep, he couldn't wait to get to the tractors, trucks, and diggers.

I love his face here!

what did Maggie do this whole time? Slept in her car seat of course! What a good girl!

It's hard to tell, but hiding behind the screen in this crate are two little piglets. They were only 2-3 weeks old, same age as Maggie! She's so little all buried down in there
And one more tractor for good measure, the big one outside. He's so little all by himself up there

A fun first family outing, much needed by everyone. Henry really enjoyed his time at the 4H fair, and I really enjoyed being able to experience a family adventure with two children (even if one slept the whole time).

And yes, the next day, we got out of the house in a record 45 minutes, all spiffy and ready for church! :)

A Baby Story

A few details about Maggie's birth; don't worry, not to many gory ones :)

We went into the hospital on Sunday night, ready to meet our little babe. Since it was a planned induction, they checked me in and then started the medicine to help me ready to dilate that night. I felt the medicine right away, and started having contractions about an hour after they gave it to me. Since I was still feeling good and allowed to eat, Gabe (graciously) ran out to get ice cream as a last treat for me, while I watched some tv. The plan was to sleep that night (which I was weary of being able to do) and then wake up in the morning to see where we were at in the induction process. I tried a couple of sleeping medicines that night but contractions became more painful and regular and I finally had to take the narcotics (staidol) to help me sleep. I drifted in and out of sleep every hour and a half, and ended up taking 5 doses of the meds. In the morning at 8:00 am, when the doctor checked me and removed the medicine, it had definitely done it's trick - 3 cm! I was definitely in active labor, no need for pitocin. My plan was to get in the shower and then get myself a nice epidural since labor was well established.

That's when things really took off - I labored on the side of the bed for about 30 min while they got everything ready, then got in the shower, which was really great, but my pain was intensifying pretty quickly. As I sat in the shower, I tried think about where I might be in labor, feeling like I was progressing quickly, but thinking that it was too soon to be as far into labor as I felt like I was. I sat in the shower for about 45 min, and then got out planning to be checked and have the epidural. And surprise! 9 + cm just like that! They called the doctor, notified her that she did NOT have time to go to the bathroom, and I was ready to deliver. Um, yes. I definitely had the urge to push, was in intense pain, and basically couldn't NOT push. No time for pain medicine, but at that point, I didn't even want it, just wanted to push. And three pushes later, at 10:04am, our little Maggie was born!

A speedy delivery, and she was here. Tears of joy, holding her on my chest for a full two hours after her birth, nursing her right away, and loving on my little girl. My recovery this time was very quick, and it was really nice to be able to be up and moving around a little so soon after her birth. I was able to stand by Maggie as she got her first bath right in the room. We spent the next two days in the hospital getting to know one another, and enjoying the delicious moments of having a newborn baby. Henry gave Maggie a birthday party, and we even managed to sneak in some rest! Maggie couldn't be a sweeter, more loved addition to our family - we feel so blessed!

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Happy First St. Patrick's Day, Maggie!
You make a cute little leprechaun
Happy St. Patrick's Day, Henry!
(neither of the kids look happy wearing this hat, actually. Henry was mostly tired)

We did have fun celebrating St. Patrick's Day with lots of GREEN things with him:

he made green playdough with Grandma
we all wore matching green and orange socks
and Henry made green milkshakes with mommy
I'm now in the club of trying to capture two kids together looking at the camera, smiling, etc. Yep, definitely hard to do. So a picture of the two of them in their green where you can actually see their shirts and looking at the camera didn't really happen. Although I did try.

I love the sweet expression on Henry's face here:
Maggie is just a little bigger than Percy. She's got a cute little hat that says Kiss Me I'm Irish.
And Happy Anniversary to my wonderful husband!
We managed to sneak away for an hour or so for a little dinner date, some much needed time together just the two of us after a whirlwind of changes.

And a picture of our family of FOUR! :)

Maggie's a star!

Yesterday morning the PR person at St. Joe's asked if we minded if Maggie appeared in a news story WSBT was doing for their morning show about a couple who volunteers to rock babies in the nursery. We didn't see the story on TV this morning, but it's online now, Maggie is the one in the yellow cap and dark black hair:

Maggie is 48 hours old and she's had her picture taken by iPhones and digital cameras; she's been on twitter, facebook, picasa and the local news; blogged about, texted about, emailed about and called about; she's been seen on TV, iPads, laptops, and cell phones. A little different than a generation or two ago. Pam and I (this is Gabe blogging by the way) look forward to seeing a hologram of our grandchildren for the first time and then teleporting there to visit.

A newborn's conversation with God

A baby asked God, "They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow,
but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?"

God said, "Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you."

The child further inquired, "But tell me, here in heaven I don't have
to do anything but sing and smile to be happy."

God said, "Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you.
And you will feel your angel's love and be very happy."

Again the small child asked, "And how am I going to be able to understand
when people talk to me if I don't know the language?"

God said, "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words
you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will
teach you how to speak."

"And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?"

God said, "Your angel will place your hands together and will teach
you how to pray."

"Who will protect me?"

God said, "Your angel will defend you even if it means risking its life."

"But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore."

God said, "Your angel will always talk to you about Me and will teach
you the way to come back to Me, even though I will always be next to you."

At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from Earth
could be heard and the child hurriedly asked, "God, if I am to leave
now, please tell me my angel's name."

God said, You will simply call her, "Mom."

a few days of fun

I've been able to have a little time off of bed rest this weekend and before going in, so we've managed to sneak in a little fun, low key activities that don't take much energy.

We celebrated our last night as a family of three with ------ ice cream!
please excuse my puffy face - it happened with Henry the last week - and it's only going to get puffier with the fluids :(
Our anniversary is in 10 days, and I don't think going out is going to be high on my priority list in 10 days, so we went for an early dinner date :) - Happy 4 years, love!

And daddy took Henry for a special treat (I opted out of this one!) to the bounce house! He hadn''t been there since last winter, and really loved it. Uncle Andrew also had a fun crazy time with Henry there this week and I think Grandad might be taking Henry later after the baby is born!
